Maggie and JesseSeveral of us were talking about how much this town owes to Maggie Lee, who is now at Three Links. John Thomas came up with the idea of honoring her by wearing her favorite color purple and we have run with this idea, deciding to promote Wear Purple for Maggie Lee Day along with Crazy Days and the re-scheduled Taste of Northfield, Thursday, July 26.

While we are encouraging everyone to wear purple (or cat designs!) in Maggie’s honor that day, we are also scheduling a get-together at 5 p.m. at the Northfield Historical Society (outside, if weather is good, inside if it is not) to honor Maggie, admire our purple finery and sing the song Scott Richardson composed for Maggie’s 90th birthday party at the Grand, “The Ballad of Maggie Lee,” sung to the “Rawhide” tune (“Rolling, rolling, rolling, keep those presses rolling…”), with guitar accompaniment. We hope Maggie will be well enough to join us but that is unknown at this point.

For those who do not have Maggie’s and the Vikings’ favorite color purple attire, I have arranged with Cynthia Gilbertson and Northfield Yarn (314 Division St.) to provide free purple yarn to you that day to adorn your wrist or lapel or whatever. Furthermore, she is providing a workshop on Wed., July 25th, from 11 am. to 1 p.m. (drop in any time) for only $2 to learn how to use a flower loom to make a yarn flower pin in purple which you can wear the next day. She assures me it will only take 15 minutes of your time for this creative endeavor.

Prairie’s Edge Humane Society plans “Meows for Maggie” cat adoptions, place and time on the 26th to be announced. Sandy Vesledahl has quite a few ideas, including purple cat collars, harnesses, leashes, catnip pillows and even purple “cat feeding Wobblers,” whatever that might be! Further details to come.

Please feel free to forward this e-mail to others. I am sure we can all come up with other ways to turn Northfield purple and show Maggie Lee how much we appreciate the 91 years she has been a resident of our town and all her contributions to our community.
