You are invited to join us, the students of SCOPE (Student Community Outreach Program Experience), in a centennial commemoration of the United States’ entry into World War I. We have conducted original research by analyzing newspaper articles and other sources to create a polished presentation aimed at recognizing Northfield’s unique role in the Forgotten War. Our presentation will share the stories of how Northfield citizens contributed to and were affected by World War I.
Date: May 16, 2017
Time: 6:00 pm
Location: Weitz Center, Carleton College
The SCOPE (Student Community Outreach Program Experience) Program connects the Northfield Historical Society and Carleton College students with 8th grade Northfield Middle School students.  Students conduct original research to discover their heritage, explore local interests, probe into the past, and share their knowledge with others.  It starts with students choosing a little-researched and unique facet of our local past and concludes with a tangible product that showcases their efforts and contributes to the community.  Past accomplishments include the Northfield Education History Museum, a field guide for the James & Younger Gang escape trail, an elementary textbook on local history, and a soon-to-be published, first-ever history of Northfield.  Last year, they presented their research on the Vietnamese and Mexican immigration experience.  This year they explored the attitudes and impact of World War I on the area.
