Programs and Events
February 19 – Museum Mingle, 6:30 pm at NHS
Karl Fredrickson presents ‘The Liberators of the Minnesota Ninth Infantry.’
On November 11th, 1863, two companies of soldiers – one composed of farm boys from Austin and one composed of men from the river towns near Winona– held up a Union train in Missouri. With their guns drawn, thirty-eight men faced down Union officers as they freed a family of slaves. How this strange event came to be—and the consequences it brought to these Minnesota boys—is the subject of this little-known but highly significant tale from the Civil War. Free admission.
