100 Years of Malt-O-Meal: Made Here, Sold Everywhere!

One hundred years ago, John S. Campbell invented a new hot wheat cereal that he called Malt-O-Meal. He formed the Campbell Cereal Company to make and sell Malt-O-Meal in Owatonna, Minnesota.

His company soon outgrew two plants in Owatonna and looked for a new location. It moved into Northfield’s Ames Mill in 1927. Malt-O-Meal cereal has been made there ever since.

In honor of the centennial of the Malt-O-Meal brand, NHS has developed a special exhibition that explores the history of the company, its products, and its employees. It features highlights from the amazing collection that John S. Campbell’s descendants donated to the museum in 2015. The exhibit will be open throughout the rest of 2019, and you are invited to come visit!

For one hundred years, through many significant changes, the Malt-O-Meal brand has stood for quality cereal at an affordable price. It is a product that is “Made in Northfield—and Sold Everywhere!”
