130 years ago today!

Today marks the 130 anniversary of the attempted bank raid on the 1st National Bank of Northfield. Whether you are a townie or a James-Younger Gang history buff, this day is a big deal. 130 years ago eight men rode into town with the intent on robbing the bank. As most of you know their plan to rob the bank was stopped by the citizens of Northfield. The raiders underestimated the citizens of Northfield and especially the courage of one man, Joseph Lee Heywood. The raider’s plans were stopped dead in their tracks and their careers as robbers ended. This event some, say marked, the end of the civil war and some say the wild west outlaw died in Northfield on this day 130 years ago, with the demise of the James-Younger Gang. Whether you love or hate this day just take a minute to thank the brave citizens of Northfield that rose up 130 years ago and saved this town.
