Joseph Lee Heywood, the acting bank cashier who frustrated the James-Younger Gang in their efforts to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, MN on September 7, 1876 and was shot dead by one of the desperadoes, was a corporal in the Union Army during the Civil War. Contrary to the presumptions of several historians, his service was neither short nor without peril. This book recreates the historical context of those years, examines the personality of Joseph Lee Heywood and traces his activities from the time he enlisted in the Union Army until the end of the war. In the process of conducting research for the book, it was learned that the man who recruited Heywood abandoned his regiment shortly thereafter and subsequently was killed in one of the most famous murder cases in Washington, DC. Forty percent of Heywood’s company deserted prior to being sent into action and 14% were discharged as being unfit, yet Joseph persisted with his military duties. He was labeled a "straggler" and falsely accused of being a deserter even though he had participated in major battles during the Vicksburg Campaign and made extraordinary efforts to rejoin his unit and contribute to the war effort after he fell ill to one of the many communicable diseases prevalent during the Civil War. Heywood’s behavior during the war is found to be consistent with his character as manifested during his time in Northfield.
